Dear Anne Frank, I’m afraid I no longer believe that most people are good at heart. And as you suggested, absent that, idealism crumbles.
At first I could sympathize very well, but then I had the feeling that something wasn’t right. And then came as a relief: If you cease to believe that people are good and your idealism crumbles, then you have to turn to your compassion to ensure the goodness of the world.
